The Holey Sheets

The Holey Sheets (Independent)

The Holey Sheets - The Holey Sheets cover

With Halloween creeping around the bend, local group Philoceraptor have gotten together with their friends to form the seasonally-themed Holey Sheets. Along with members of Blood Diamonds, Humans, Blanche Devereaux and many more, they’ve created the holiday sound piece “BOO (Spooky Indie Halloween 2011),” with all proceeds being generously donated to UNICEF. Lightning Dust- I Knew

The basement of the Waldorf Hotel was absolutely packed for the Lightning Dust/Hard Drugs split seven-inch release party, which appeared to be the hottest ticket in East Vancouver. Read More »

Loose Shus

with HUMANS, October 14 @ Five Sixty

Passing through a curving tunnel after waiting in a lengthy line-up, I popped into Five Sixty’s unusual main space with Tyler, the Creator’s “Yonkers” blasting in what looked like an anticipatory club setting. With its minimal decorations and impressive stage corner entirely illuminated by a number of projected screens, the art gallery-cum-club made for a refreshing setting. Read More »

Kathryn Calder- Slip Away

Kathryn Calder is having fun. A great deal of fun. And even if she isn’t, it certainly sounds like it. Both the B.C.-based singer/songwriter as well as the full-time New Pornographer’s latest solo album – the recently released Bright and Vivid – are teeming with twists and turns for the listener, in what amounts to a considerable re-invention in Calder’s artistry. Philoceraptor- Clever Girl

SHiNDiG is quite the opportunity for up-and-coming local bands to strut their stuff in front of an audience who might not have taken the chance on them otherwise. The prize at the end of the battle-of-the-bands contest, when all is said and done, is a rich one: recording time, features in Discorder magazine, guaranteed spots at festivals like Music Waste and other goodies can be huge for musicians who shell out their hard earned cash in the name of their art. October 18 @ The Biltmore

NATSUMEN- Whole Lotta Summer

Since 2010, Toronto’s Steven Tanaka has organized Next Music from Tokyo, a tour which, as its name implies, has to do with our musical brethren from across the pond. The traveling show’s third edition, held at the Biltmore, treated Vancouverites to the best Japan had to offer, with some local band candy-coating on top. Read More »

Siskiyou- El Condor Pasa

Siskiyou’s record release party for their sophomore album, Keep Away the Dead, was an intimate yet inviting affair for all those in attendance at the Waldorf. Sometimes it’s just nice to throw on your favourite flannel and go mingle with other plaid aficionados. It’s even nicer to chat with those plaid-clad individuals when great music is being played. The Thursday evening event was no exception. Read More »

After catching Cut Copy DJ at the Waldorf the night before, I had high hopes for their show at the Vogue. Witnessing the kind of atmosphere these guys are capable of summoning with a pair of turntables definitely built up anticipation of what they could do as a full band. Read More »
